PEth Testing

Direct alcohol biomarker in blood

Overview

PEth (Phosphatidylethanol) is a phospholipid that forms in the body specifically as a result of alcohol consumption. Unlike traditional alcohol tests, PEth is a direct biomarker — it cannot be triggered by incidental or environmental alcohol exposure.

PEth testing from Chemisys Laboratories provides objective, defensible evidence of recent alcohol use — making it the preferred method for alcohol monitoring in clinical and compliance settings.

Traditional alcohol tests (breathalyzer, urine ethanol) only detect very recent consumption — often within hours. PEth provides a significantly longer and more specific detection window.

Why it matters

Clinical value

2–4 week detection window

Significantly longer than breathalyzer or urine ethanol testing.

Highly specific for ethanol

Not affected by incidental exposure to hand sanitizer, mouthwash, or fermented foods.

Objective, defensible data

Supports or refutes patient self-reporting with clinical reference ranges and interpretation guidance.

Preferred for alcohol monitoring

Valuable for MAT and alcohol recovery programs where precision matters.

Applications
